An incredible performance leaving lasting memoriesWhile we listened to numerous Bill Frisell records in the past, we did not quite expect HOW GOOD the duo with a young bass player, Thomas Morgan, would sound. It was a perfectly measured, insightful and incredibly matched performance. Almost two hours of pure listener's delight.
Bill was silent and fully immersed in music, as usual. Which to me is much better than stupid stories behind song names from no-name musicians. Twice during the performance Bill broke his silence, and that was to first say F@@K when he accidentally pulled the cable out, and then to apologize for saying F**K and repeating it with irony....

Pretty great stuffIf you don't know Bill Frisell, he plays a kind of country-infused jazz. It's pretty accessible to anyone, I'd say. This show was a guitar-bass duo, so I came in expecting an intimate, relaxing performance, and that's what I got.
Bill played masterfully as always, and his bassist Thomas Morgan was wonderful too (Usually when I don't have too much to say it's because I didn't notice anything bad). The audience liked this duo's playing so much that they asked for (and received) not one, but two encores!
It's a very small point, as they played multiple tunes, but I felt like he was stretching it a little bit in his second tune with the effects and the dissonance. I mean, you have to expect a bit of that in jazz. Bill knows how to use his effects pedals and used them tastefully throughout the other parts of the performance.
Le Gesu is one of the smaller performance spaces for the Montreal Jazz festival, so it's suited to more intimate shows where the audience can connect better with the performers. I'm glad I went out to see this show.
