Wasn't my thing, but doesn't mean it was badRemember that opinions in music are pretty subjective. Also, I didn't get what I was expecting.
I was expecting to hear something like Guiliana's Family First record which I'd heard on Bandcamp. But his new music with this group aims to sound more like The Bad Plus. Now that's perfectly fine if you like The Bad Plus, and a bunch of the audience obviously seemed to enjoy it, but I'm not a huge fan.
To me, it sounded like Guiliana was trying to play music that didn't totally suit him, that he was trying to be something he wasn't. Maybe he was succeeding and I just wasn't a big fan of what he was doing, which gave me that impression, though.
In any case, his band is full of skilled musicians and the performance was expertly played. Even if I wasn't a huge fan of the style, the performance was relatively well put together and structured, so I appreciated that quite a bit. Everyone knew what they were doing and did it well.
Musicians are always evolving, trying out new things, and that's a good thing. Just means that you should make sure they're playing the kind of stuff you enjoy before you go see them. The Montreal Jazz Fest has done a good job linking sample youtube videos in their event pages.
Le Gesu is one of the smaller performance spaces for the Montreal Jazz festival, so it's suited to more intimate shows where the audience can connect better with the performers. Guiliana seems a bit stage-shy when it comes to introducing himself and his music, so I guess it was fitting. All in all a nice night, even if the music wasn't totally my thing.
